Leipzig / Dresden – July 8th 2021: Can Artificial Intelligence support teachers in teaching and enable students’ individual learning? Answers to these questions are currently being sought at six schools in Saxony on behalf of the Conference of Education Ministers. On July 8, 2021, Saxony’s Minister of State for Education Christian Piwarz and State Secretary Herbert Wolff will be shown the first results of tests with the Area9 Rhapsode Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), which was developed by the Danish company Area9 Lyceum. During a visit to the site in Leipzig, Khurram Jamil, MD, a member of the technology company’s founding team, and Andreas Kambach, Managing Director of the German Area9 site, will report on the first successful test runs with students at various grade levels and teachers.
During the test phase at six schools in Saxony, it will be examined whether the ITS can also be used at schools in Germany and thus support teachers in a meaningful way. Specifically, it is being tested whether the platform:
– offers students different learning paths, according to their needs,
– supports teachers in assessing the learning status of their students,
– makes it possible for all students to reach the same level of competence after completing the respective modules.
The German states of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are testing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools on behalf of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs. Used already by children in Denmark and the UK, as well as for learners of all ages including adults, Area9 Rhapsode has more than 1.5 million users.
Saxony’s Minister of State for Education and Cultural Affairs Christian Piwarz said, “The initial results of the tests with Area9 Rhapsode at Saxon schools impressively show what an Intelligent Tutoring System can achieve in the individual teaching of learning material for students and what a great support it can also be for teachers in the individual teaching of knowledge.” State Secretary Herbert Wolff adds, “We have seen a real innovation here for the first time, a revolution in digital education, and we will make a recommendation at the end of the test phase in September 2021 from the Education in the Digital World Steering Committee of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs.”
Khurram Jamil, MD: „Also driven by the global pandemic, we have invested heavily in the further development of the AI-powered learning platform Area9 Rhapsode for use in schools over the past year – also supported by the Danish Growth Fund and investors like Lego Ventures, who are convinced by the educational approach of our international advisory board and our 25 years of experience with AI-powered learning technology. Even with the current state of the platform, we can teach the skills and knowledge that the next generations will need, with a personalized tutoring approach for each and every student. We continue to develop the platform to constantly adapt the benefits of AI to the technological possibilities.”
Andreas Kambach: „3 years ago we saw Area9, the market leader in adaptive learning systems, at an international trade fair and were excited about what artificial intelligence can do – as a personal tutor for each individual learner – providing individual learning paths for everyone. We have now successfully introduced learning technology for industry, banks and publishing houses, among others, and are now focusing on schools. In Germany, too, we have set ourselves the task of enabling students to achieve the best possible learning results. To achieve this, we are talking to school book publishers and, with a strong partner network, we want to provide the German school system with the learning content it needs in our Intelligent Tutoring System Area9 Rhapsode.”
